Ferns

Plant Care Guidelines

Light:  Ferns prefer bright, indirect light, but will usually adapt to moderate light. They will burn in direct sun.

Soil:  Use a standard potting mix and add an equal amount of peat moss. For information on potting mixes, see Planting in Containers.

Fertilizer:  Fertilize once a month during the growing season (early spring through late summer) with a liquid or soluble plant food.

Water:
How much: Add enough water so that 10 percent of the water drains through the pot.

How often: Water when the top inch of soil is still moist, but not wet. For additional information on watering houseplants, see Watering Container Plants.

Temperature:  Ferns will do well in average house temperatures.

Special Conditions:  Ferns are sensitive to salts, and salts must be flushed from the soil with extra water. Do not let ferns stand in drainage water.
